The Elder Response Initiative provides free services to seniors in historically and predominately black neighborhoods, primarily Charlotte's Beatties Ford Road Corridor ("the Corridor"). The Initiative was created because Charlotte has experienced rapid gentrification that has heightened the risk of displacement, particularly on the Corridor. The Corridor has a large senior population at risk of displacement. As such, the Initiative provides seniors with assistance obtaining (1) critical home repairs; (2) future planning (e.g. wills, Powers of Attorney); and (3) property tax relief. Because the Corridor is also a food desert, the Initiative also houses a Senior Feeding Program that provides seniors with free healthy groceries and cooked meals that are purchased from black owned restaurants on the Corridor. See below for more.
This is Mr. R. Talford, a 77-year old participant in our Elder Response Initiative. Mr. Talford reached out because a real estate company purchased the property next to his and was able to obtain a demolition permit, which gave them the ability to demolish his only driveway at his home because a survey revealed Mr. Talford’s driveway sat on property that originally was not lawfully his. However Alesha Brown, FTS Executive Director, in her separate and official capacity as an attorney at Hall and Dixon Law was able to obtain a judgment that Mr. Talford acquired the property through adverse possession and is now the lawful owner. Mr. Talford has also received a deed officially transferring the property to him so he and his heirs won’t have to worry about similar claims in the future.
FTS has assisted Ms. Onnie with future planning documents and free healthy meals and groceries every week. Check out her attitidue of gratitude . . .
